Mind your own Kingdom

Mind Your Own Kingdom is based on the three well-known monkeys: Mizaru, who does not want to see evil. Kikazaru, who does not want to hear evil. Iwazaru, who does not want to speak evil. The crowns on their heads symbolize that we each have our own little "kingdom" to rule, where we must take leadership over our actions, patterns, choices, and the energy we choose to send out to our surroundings and relationships. The work thus revolves around personal responsibility and the necessity of tending to one's own inner and outer "kingdom" before interfering in others' lives. It's not about turning a blind eye to injustice or remaining silent. It's about distinguishing between what we are truly responsible for and what we use as a distraction from our own lives. The question at the bottom of the work: "If God ran out of time, what would he do?" opens a larger existential dimension: What would be most important if time were limited? To judge, control, and move around in others' "kingdoms" while one's own kingdom stands and decays? Or to take responsibility for the life and world one is helping to create? Collage and mixed media created with recycled paper, text fragments, paint, and texture-creating materials. Lacquered/matte finish.
